Space Funeral

Image
Space Funeral is a Japanese-styled role playing game. The game was created by Stephen "thecatamites" Gillmurphy. Since its release on September 17, 2010, the game has received critical acclaim. Personally, I didn't like it. This game sure loves its blood. What is the plot? Philip is a pajama-clad boy living a surrealistic hellscape. He learns the world is dying and can only be saved by finding the City of Forms. As such, Philip goes on a quest to find it. Along the way, he is joined by Leg Horse, a horse made of severed legs. What's the gameplay like? It's a pretty standard Japanese-styled RPG. You explore a world and run into monsters to fight. Combat is turn-based with your combat effectiveness being based on your stats and items you have equipped. Philip and Leg Horse both have unique abilities, which cost magic points (which can be replenished with certain items or resting). The one unique feature is the "Mystery" ability, which has a random

Gen:Lock

The cast What is Gen:Lock ?  Gen:Lock is an animated, web series made by the company Rooster Teeth. At at the time of writing, there has been one season. Reportedly, there is going to be a second season. However, it hasn't premiered yet. What is the plot? In the later 21st century, the two political superpowers, the Polity (i.e. the good guys) and the Union (i.e. the bad guy), are at war. The Polity tasks our main characters (Julian Chase, Yasamin Madrani, Cameron MacCloud, Kazu Iida, Valentina Romanyszyn) with using Gen:Lock, an experimental form of technology that allows the user to download their brains into machines, to pilot giant robots to fight the Union forces. One thing that bugged me is how the never explained why the robots are necessary. We only see the robots do things a trained task force with tanks or a drone strike could accomplish. In addition, the Gen:Lock technology has numerous drawbacks: you need to meet numerous requirements to avoid frying your brain,

Pax Americana

Image
Spoilers for Pax Americana The cover to Pax Americana Pax Americana is a one-shot comic published by DC Comics. It was written by Grant Morrison and illustrated by Frank Quitely. According to Morrison, he intended Pax Americana to be a "homage and ... challenge to Watchmen". Since most of the coverage has been comparing Pax Americana to Watchmen , I will try to keep such comparisons to a minimum. What is the plot? The president of the United States, the fictional President Halley, is assassinated the government-sponsored superhero Peacemaker. Naturally, his successor, Doctor Eden, wants to figure out why. Meanwhile, the Question is trying to solve the murder of Nora O'Rourke. My main issue with the comic is the use of non-linear storytelling. The plot constantly jumps across time and space in a fashion that is very disorienting and makes the narrative confusing. This might be forgivable if the non-linear storytelling added something to the narrative
